A client asked me a direct question once I started this work. She sat across from me, eyes sincere, voice gentle, but the question sharp as a blade: “Vishnupriya, this is noble work. You are healing people. You are touching souls. Why do you charge for it?”

She was not being unkind. She genuinely meant it. And I could see in her eyes that she had been carrying this question for a while — maybe even asking it about herself, about her own gifts, her own reluctance to be paid for what she did.

I took a breath. And I said: “Because the universe itself doesn’t work for free.”

The Law That Governs Everything

Look at nature for a moment. The sun gives light. The earth grows food. The tree releases oxygen. We breathe it in and release carbon dioxide. The river feeds the ocean. The clouds feed the river. Nothing in nature gives in one direction forever. Everything flows. Everything returns. Everything exchanges.

This is not a coincidence. This is a law, the law of energy exchange. And it governs every ecosystem, every relationship, every soul, every business including yours.

When this law is honored, things flourish. When it is ignored, things wither.

Money is Energy Too. In spirituality, we talk about how thoughts are energy, words are energy, healing is energy, love is energy.

But here is what many of us conveniently forget: money is also energy.

It represents time, effort, attention, and value. When someone pays you for your spiritual work, they are not handing you a piece of paper. They are transferring their life energy the hours they worked, the effort they invested to you. And in return, you give them yours.

That is energy exchange. And it is one of the most sacred acts in existence. This is Ancient, Not Modern.
This is not something invented to justify charging for online / offline courses, sessions, workshops and so on.

In the guru-shishya tradition, students offered guru dakshina a gift of gratitude and reciprocity that completed the exchange. The exchange was understood to be sacred because both the giver and the receiver knew that without it, the transmission remained incomplete.

Energy exchange completes the circuit. Without it, healing, transformation, knowledge cannot fully land.

What Happens When There Is No Exchange –
When energy flows only in one direction when you give and give without receiving the channel gets clogged. Burnout follows. Resentment follows.

I know this from my own experience. In the beginning, I began attracting relationships (clients) where giving flowed in one direction. I kept offering my time, energy, and gifts, while ignoring the imbalance that was quietly exhausting me.

It took me a while to see it for what it was not bad luck, not a coincidence, but a mirror. My own unhealed pattern of undervaluing myself was drawing in exactly the energy that matched it.

When I finally shared everything with my mentor , all of it, the exhaustion, the resentment, the clients, the hurt she understood immediately. She recognized what was happening. She saw that my gift was real, but the pattern beneath it was quietly undoing me. And that conversation became the beginning of my undoing of those patterns and there is no looking back. For the first time, I realized that receiving was not selfish. It was part of the healing.

That is when I truly understood: an unbalanced exchange doesn’t just drain you. It teaches you, sometimes painfully, exactly where you have stopped honoring your own worth.

An unbalanced exchange doesn’t just hurt the healer. It also prevents the receiver from fully receiving. Because when something requires no investment, it is often not valued as deeply.

Why Paying Creates the Space for Transformation –
When someone genuinely invests in their healing, they show up differently. They do the inner work. They integrate the teachings. They don’t half-listen. They show up whole.

Think about this from your own life. The retreat you saved up for. The session you invested in. Didn’t you show up more fully for those?

That is not greed at work. That is the law of energy exchange at work.

The Guilt We Carry –
Somewhere along the way through culture, conditioning, religion many of us absorbed a story: “Spiritual work should be free. If you charge, you are not truly spiritual.” This story has kept countless gifted healers small, struggling, and unable to sustain their sacred work in the world.

You cannot pour from an empty vessel. Charging for your spiritual work is not a betrayal of your purpose. It is what makes your purpose sustainable.

And to those who ask : does this mean spiritual work is only for people who can afford it? Not at all. Many healers offer free content and community work. Energy exchange is not about excluding people. It is about honoring value for both the healer and the one being healed.

A Final Word –
By the end of our conversation, something had shifted in my client’s eyes.

She said softly: “So by not charging, I have actually been blocking the flow.” Yes. Exactly that.

When you charge with integrity, when you receive with grace, when you allow the exchange to be complete you are honoring the law that runs the universe. You are modeling wholeness for every person who walks through your door, thats your work.

So the next time someone asks you, “Why do you charge for this noble work?”answer clearly. Without apology. Without guilt. “Because this is how energy flows. And flow is how healing happens.”

Have you ever struggled with charging for your gifts?

For years, I offered guidance freely whenever someone reached out. Over time, I noticed a pattern. The people who invested in their own transformation showed up differently. They reflected more deeply. They took action more consistently. They valued the process more fully. The exchange was never about money. It was about commitment.
